What Oasis can teach us about public speaking

Oasis have sold over 75m albums.
Their songs have been streamed more than 8.2bn times on Spotify alone.
They released 7 studio albums and 28 singles.

But a line in their very first single in 1994, Supersonic, struck a chord with me and has stuck with me ever since.

You’ve gotta be yourself. You can be no one else.’

And in that line is an important message about public speaking.

I’m not making a tenuous link here or jumping on the Oasis bandwagon. (I’m already on it, and have been since I was 16)

The line is making a point about authenticity. The single, simple, powerful importance of authenticity.

Audiences crave authenticity. Whether it’s at a music gig or a business presentation. And nowadays authenticity is more vital, and rare, than ever.

Everywhere you look, the conversation seems to be about …
Fake news
Artificial Intelligence
Ultra processed foods

People are missing, and craving, the Real Deal.
The genuine article.
Authenticity.

The advice to be authentic when speaking publicly applies to beginners and advanced speakers alike. It’s universal.

Beginner?
Avoid trying to put on a ‘speaker persona’. Just be yourself. It helps with nerves.

Advanced speaker?
Authenticity will help with gravitas and charisma, to help land your points.

So Liam and Noel Gallagher were right, you’ve got to be yourself. Their authenticity helped them sell 75m records.

If you nail that presentation with authenticity I guarantee you’ll be feeling supersonic. And you can go and fetch a gin and tonic.

Make your skills supersonic
